A Tale of Two Tigers
Palmetto High School used a late goal to tie the game, and good goalkeeping in the penalty shootout to advance to the title game of the Sarasota Classic with a 3-2 victory over Sarasota High School Tuesday night.
Two goals by Sarasota’s Chris Tan had given the Sailors a 2-1 lead, but Pedro Cavillo scored his second goal of the game off a scramble in front of the Sarasota goal to send the game into the shootout. Three Sailors missed on their opportunities in the best of five format to send the Tigers into the championship round.
The Tigers of Tampa’s Jesuit High scored two goals in the first five minutes of their semifinal against Manatee, only to see the Hurricanes Kyle Harris score on a breakaway to make it a tight contest in the second half. Jesuit then went on to score two more goals for the 4-1 final.
Jesuit and Palmetto will meet tonight at Gene Pillot Field to decide the championship at 8:00 p.m.
Mariner of Cape Coral defeated Cardinal Mooney, 1-0, while Riverview bested Ft. Myers by the same score in the consolation rounds.
The scheduled games at Pillot Field for today are:
2:00 Ft. Meyers and Cardinal Mooney
4:00 Riverview and Mariner
6:00 Manatee and Sarasota
